VALLEY NEWS #40

May 13, 2006

As Chuck Shook is wont to say, ‘rumours fly on the valley’s moccasin telegraph’.
We keep hearing that Shelter Valley Aggregates (SVA) is a done deal, that the trees will soon be felled, that, indeed, the sky is falling.

Well, it ain’t, they won’t be, and it isn’t.

So much is going on behind the scenes and every week your BOD and your lawyers come up with something new, a twist on something old, another ‘curious’ action by A/H Council, another legal interpretation, a new document, a complex ownership web, a fuzzy map, a set of photographs of the toxic dump, and so on.

A lot of this is rather esoteric stuff and that is why we have hired experts
to help us through this political morass.

Now repeat after me!
“IT ISN’T A DONE DEAL. TIME IS ON OUR SIDE. WE ARE GETTING LOTS OF CAPABLE, PROFESSIONAL HELP.”

Then ask yourselves this question: Were it a done deal, why would your Directors, all of whom have their solar panels on the south side, and all of whom have another life, why would they spend so much time and money, and expend so much personal energy and emotion on a cooked goose?

SVA News:

•• SVA has submitted a request for a consent application to adjust their connection from the site to the haul route. If you live near the site in question, you should have received notification of this action by SVA.
The application will be heard in Grafton about 7:50pm on May 24. The sketch SVA provided is not that clear. In fact, it appears that the proposed easement runs through part of the Tubbs Corner Significant Natural Area.

IF YOU WANT TO RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF THIS REQUEST, AND ITS OUTCOME, YOU MUST SEND A WRITTEN REQUEST TO MR. T. KOROTKI, CLERK/ADMINISTRATOR, A/H TOWNSHIP.

•• There is still debate as to who actually owns the dump site and who would be liable for any harm and damage that might arise from the toxic wastes.

•• So far, we have no evidence that SVA has filed an application for the Environmental Assessment they are required to carry out.

AND IF THE FAT LADY HAS SUNG, WHY WOULD WE BE HOLDING SO MANY FUNDRAISING *** EVENTS TO FINANCE RESEARCH AND LEGAL FEES?

MEMBERSHIP: Do you have new neighbours who may not be aware of what Valley Voices is all about? Tell them about SVA. Refer them to www.valleyvoices.ca. Encourage them to join our Association. Your Board is still working hard on your behalf. The more you reciprocate, the greater the chance that the Valley will prevail.
