Letter to Township of Alnwick-Haldimand from A Shelter Valley Resident:

August 16, 2003

To All Councillors:
I write again to voice my opposition to the proposed gravel pit in Shelter Valley.
You have all, no doubt, heard this said in a myriad of different ways by numerous people. The pit will be noisy, dusty, obtrusive; the trucks will be dangerous on the roads, will cause damage and potentially accidents; it will destroy our peaceful way of life, increase our taxes and reduce our property values.

I understand that your intention is to discuss traffic impact studies and peer reviews at the next council meeting.
I request that you do traffic impact studies on ALL surrounding roads, for as you know, those trucks will travel any roads they choose if the pit is approved. The study must also look at the number of school buses travelling local roads and the number of children waiting for buses. I have noticed that there are a good number of signs reading "Watch for Children", "Hidden Driveway" and the "flashing light school bus" sign.
There are also many places on a number of roads where there are blind corners and tight turns. How are these trucks going to travel these roads year round, from 6AM to 7PM, 6 days a week and not become a hazard eventually leading perhaps to someone's death? Have you ever met one of those huge combines coming round a tight corner?
Our roads are winding, scenic country roads, not suitable for this type of traffic. People on horse back, kids on bikes, people walking their dogs, slow moving farm vehicles, people going about their everyday lives. This is what these roads are for.

We need you, our Council, our representatives, to protect us from these potential road hazards; to protect our way of life; to vote NO to re-zoning of this property.
Cramahe has already publically stated that they are against it. Join them in refusing this pit.

Think of road repair and upgrades.
Think of property values.
Think of the safety of children and all others that travel these roads.
Think of all the people who have spent hard earned money, sometimes life savings to purchase in this beautiful area to live out their lives with the intention of retiring on the profits of resale.

Respectfully submitted,
Kathie Lloyd
