STORM - SAVE THE OAK RIDGES MORAINE COALITION
A Notice Regarding Monitoring Projects in the Oak Ridges Moraine

Monitoring the Moraine (MTM) is a citizen-led project in support of the Oak Ridges Moraine (ORM). Your efforts are what the project needs to be successful!

Queen’s Park passed Oak Ridges Moraine legislation (‘01) and established the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan (ORMCP) (‘02) to help protect the Moraine from future development. Because the ORM is  vulnerable to development and environmentally irresponsible activities and management practices, someone must monitor the implementation of the ORMCP to protect the Moraine’s health.

Water systems are vital features needing protection. Permeable sands and gravel absorb precipitation and replenish the Moraine’s aquifers. Our health depends on the safekeeping of this process. We must make sure the Moraine stays as vigorous and beautiful as it is now for future generations.

This is where citizens on and off the moraine can get involved. The MTM will train volunteers to understand, monitor and assess the biological health of the ORM, and the rules and regulations surrounding it. This information will be publicly accessible through an online map forum. It will become a living library as volunteers feed it with new and updated info which will let us know if the ORMCP is being implemented properly. Combining environmental and policy monitoring will give you the tools to make informed recommendations for the ORMCP review in 2014.

MTM is a partnership between STORM, Citizens' Environment Watch, and the Centre for Community Mapping. Our most important partnership, however, is with you – citizens concerned about the health of the ORM. We want to work with you on this project.
